Engaging the mind through the eye.

As regular followers of my blog already know, I take a lot of inspiration (a lot of inspiration) from the words and works of the authors who’ve trampled a trail before me. One of the main purposes of the Daily Creative Writer, after all, is to talk about the impact writers like Julia Cameron and Anne Lamott have had on my creative endeavors.
How great to stumble upon a visual manifestation of some of the philosophies and words of wisdom bestowed upon us by some of our most esteemed literary giants. As reported by Buzzfeed, over at Etsy, illustrator Evan Robertson has turned clever words into beautiful posters. There’s one of my favorite quotes by Hemingway (“Write drunk, edit sober”), and another from ee cummings (“listen/there’s a hell of a/good universe next door/let’s go”), along with new quotes that are soon to become favorites (what’s not to love about Oscar Wilde’s assertion that, “An idea that is not dangerous of being called an idea at all”?).
What I love about this project is the way it combines the visual with the literary. It also captures the process of reading – how the words morph and change into something else as they travel from our eyes to our brains to our heart – and why nothing compares to getting lost in the pages of a good book.
After looking over Evan’s 24 posters, I’m having a hard time deciding which one (or two…or three…or…dammit….how do I decide?) should adorn the walls of my office. Will Jane Austen work some magic? What about TS Eliot? JD Salinger? Or the man himself, F. Scott Fitzgerald?
This is going to take some time.
And while I ponder, here’s a sample of Robertson’s work – see if you can’t find an embarrassment of riches yourself!
